Sonia Nieto quotes Kozol (2005) in her article Language, Diversity, and Learning: Lessons for Education in the 21st Century:
At the same time that we teach all students English, we need to focus on the crushing conditions that pose tremendous barriers to student learning: poverty, racism, inequality, poorly financed schools, tracking, unfair testing policies, lack of access to an excellent education, and negative ideologies about bilingual education and second language learners
Why is it that we continue to teach languages as a discrete discipline separated from all other subjects and events in the student’s life? We need to look at the student as someone who has so much to give and just needs the guidance of a mentor to coach them. Language is just one component.
