4 Registration-Free Video Conferencing Sites

There are a large number of place online that you can chat with someone without needing to register. Many of these sites are not safe for use in the classroom. There are very few sites that allow for a simple, safe video chat without registering first. Here are four that don’t need registration and provide a private place to host a video conference:


Chatride

ChatRide: Video chat with one other person and use text chat as well. When the person goes to the site, you are automatically connected. You can turn off the video or audio as well. It can also be used in fullscreen mode (video and text chat).

Boostcam

BoostCam: Video chat with one other person. Text chat is available outside of fullscreen mode. You can move the inset picture to any corner by simply clicking and dragging. The quality is lower, but that could also mean lower bandwidth as well.

Ubiqq

Ubiqq: This is a very simple one-to-one video chat that has two small screens on the page. There does not appear to be any place to make it fullscreen or to use text chat. You can turn off the video or the audio simply by clicking on your screen to toggle through the options.

MeBeam: DO NOT USE THIS SITE! There are problems with this site. I apologize for any problems I may have caused. 

These sites could be used by students to do group work as homework, to consult with parents or other teachers, or to give a simple lesson online. I’m sure there are plenty of other reasons as well. Culture Street Picture Book: A simple way to make a children’s book online

There are a few places on the internet where students can create a picture book. Culture Street has a simple picture book maker that doesn’t need registration. Here is how it works:

Steps:
  1. Go to the Picturebook Maker site and click on ‘Enter’ at the bottom of the book.
  2. You will come to an open book with tools along the bottom.
    1. The far left button is the background button. Click on it to add the background that is showing on the button. To change the background, click on the forward and back arrows on the background button. There are 8 backgrounds to choose from.
    2. The button to the right of the background button is the animal button. There are four animals to choose from. Click to activate the animal, move it to the page and click to place. Two sliders will appear. The left slider controls the size of the animal and the right slider changes what they animal does. You can always click on the animal again to activate it and move it to another spot. Click once more to place it on the page.
    3. The button to the right of the animals is the objects button. There are 19 objects to choose from. Click to activate the object, click to place, and move the slider to resize.
    4. Click on the pencil to activate the writing tool. Once activated, click anywhere on the page to get a text box. Type in your text and move the slider to resize. Click on the black corners or sides to move the text box.
    5. Below the pencil is the page buttons. Click on the far left button to create a cover and click on the far right button to create a back cover. You only have a total of six pages to write your story, so it will need to be short.
  3. Once you are done, click on ‘Finish book’ to save your book (needs email information) or to print (no information necessary). If you have a PDF printer on your computer (Mac: part of your OS already; PC: needs PDF printer driver), you can save it as a PDF to share with others.
While this is a pretty simple picture book maker, it is quite nice looking and provides a way for students to create a book without having to register. This would work well with younger students, especially ELLs.
